ECUADOR - FINCA LA NORIA
SL 28
ANAEROBIC WASHED
Nestled in the beautiful Loja region of Ecuador, La Noria Coffee Farm boasts an exciting journey since its founding in 2017.
ABOUT THE FARM
Managed by a dedicated Ecuadorian agricultural company, it proudly belongs to a renowned coffee-growing family from Ibague, Colombia.
The farm is called 'La Noria,' which translates to 'windmill' in honor of Ecuador's first wind power generation. Today, the farm practices sustainable agriculture, utilizing neem and worm tea for fertilization.
Perched at an impressive elevation, La Noria enjoys 12 hours of sunlight throughout the year. Coffee plants flourish in nutrient-rich soil, shielded by tall shade trees while receiving water from a mineral-rich spring.
ABOUT THIS VARIETY
SL28 was developed in the 1930s by Scott Agricultural Laboratories in Kenya (hence the "SL" prefix). The variety was chosen for its resilience to drought, suitability for high-altitude cultivation, and outstanding flavor profile. It has been introduced thereafter to other coffee-growing regions in Africa and Latin America.
SL28's unique flavor profile and adaptability have solidified its reputation in the specialty coffee industry. Despite challenges related to disease susceptibility, its cup quality continues to make it a sought-after variety among coffee producers and consumers worldwide.
ABOUT THIS PROCESS
Anaerobic coffee processing ferments coffee cherries in a sealed, oxygen-free environment, resulting in unique, complex flavors. This method can be effectively applied to whole cherries (natural process) or post-pulping (as in honey and washed processes).
